Mitchell’s Late Heroics Lift Coastal Carolina to Series Sweep at App State

BOONE, N.C. – Walker Mitchell delivered the go-ahead hit in the eighth inning to lift No. 16 Coastal Carolina to an 8-7 victory over Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep of the Sun Belt Conference series.

With the game tied 7-7 in the eighth inning, Mitchell lined an RBI single to left field that scored Trace Mazon and gave the Chanticleers the lead for good. Mitchell finished the afternoon 4-for-5 with two RBIs to pace the Coastal Carolina offense.

The Chanticleers rallied throughout the afternoon after falling behind early.

App State built a 5-0 lead after three innings before Coastal began its comeback in the fourth inning. The Chanticleers plated four runs in the frame, including a two-run single by Ty Barrango that drove in Jordan Taylor and Blagen Pado to cut the deficit to one. Barrango finished the day with three hits and two RBIs.

Coastal then took its first lead of the game in the seventh inning with three more runs to move ahead 7-5. Appalachian State answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to even the score at 7-7, setting up Mitchell's go-ahead hit an inning later.

Darin Horn came in to record the final two outs in the ninth inning to earn his second save of the season, while Colby Richardson improved to 2-1 after tossing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.

The Chanticleers scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning or later in all three games of the series.

With the victory, Coastal Carolina improves to 13-6 overall and 3-0 in Sun Belt Conference play.

The Chanticleers will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face Campbell. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET, with the game streamed on FloSports.
