MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior
Max Bengtsson shot 10-under par to earn co-medalist honors and lead Coastal Carolina to a third-place finish at the inaugural Michael A. Marino Classic, held March 15-17 at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
Coastal Carolina finished tied for third at 3-under par (290-277-294) with the College of Charleston. NC State won the team title at 15-under, followed by Louisville at 11-under.
Bengtsson, who carded rounds of 72, 63 and 71, shared medalist honors with Louisville's Cooper Claycomb to secure his first career victory as a Chanticleer. His second-round 63 – the lowest round in program history – featured a bogey-free card and vaulted him atop the leaderboard. He closed with a steady 1-under 71, highlighted by three birdies over his final 10 holes to cap the win.
Drew Sykes continued his strong spring campaign with a tie for seventh at 6-under par (72-71-67). The sophomore surged up the leaderboard with a 5-under 67 in the final round, carding five birdies, including three on the back nine, to record his third top-10 finish of the season.
Harrison James tied for 52nd at 5-over par (73-75-77), while
Jack Lee tied for 58th at 7-over (73-72-79).
Lucas Arntsen finished 74th at 11-over par (74-77-81).
Competing as individuals,
Owen Kim tied for 22nd at even-par (71-74-71). Freshman
Santiago Schele finished 67th at 10-over and
Coleman Ferguson tied for 85th at 16-over.
The Chanticleers return to action Sunday, March 22, at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate.
