DELAND, Fla. — Despite a career-high five goals from
Alexandra Horn and a second-half comeback that erased a four-goal deficit, Coastal Carolina dropped a 12-11 overtime decision against Athletic Sun foe Stetson on Saturday afternoon.
The Chanticleers (6-4, 0-2) outshot the Hatters 43-22 and rallied with an 8-2 scoring surge spanning the third and fourth quarters, but Stetson (1-8, 1-0) converted a free-position opportunity at the 3:26 mark of overtime to secure the win.
Coastal Carolina fell behind early as Stetson scored four first-quarter goals and added five more in the second to build a 9-3 halftime lead. The Chanticleers, however, flipped the momentum in the third quarter, scoring five times—including a pair from Horn and back-to-back goals from
Alyson Mascolo—to cut the deficit to 10-8 entering the fourth.
Horn led the offensive charge with five goals and an assist, while Mascolo added two goals.
Sophie Kingsborough scored twice, including a shorthanded goal late in the third quarter, and Nikki Seven dished out four assists to pace the Chanticleer attack.
Coastal continued its push in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 11-11 behind goals from Horn, Kingsborough and Seven. The Chanticleers held Stetson to just two goals over the final 30 minutes of regulation, with goalkeeper
Charlotte Sadler finishing with six saves.
The Chanticleers controlled possession throughout, winning the draw control battle 16-10 and committing just eight turnovers, but were unable to overcome Stetson goalkeeper Maddie Eckert's 18 saves.
Coastal returns home Wednesday, March 25, to face Old Dominion. The first draw is scheduled for noon at Brooks Stadium.
