JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Coastal Carolina mounted a late push but could not overcome a four-goal deficit as Lindenwood held on for an 11-9 victory over the Chanticleers on Tuesday in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship at Rock Stadium.
Coastal Carolina closes its season at 10-8 overall, while Lindenwood improved to 8-10 and advanced to the tournament semifinals.
The Chanticleers were led by
Gabrielle Beaudet, who scored a game-high five goals, while
Alyson Mascolo added two goals. Nikki Seven finished with a goal and two assists, and Charlotte Erb also found the net for Coastal.
Coastal struck first on Beaudet's goal less than two minutes into the contest and twice held one-goal leads in the opening quarter before Lindenwood answered with the final goal of the period for a 3-2 edge.
Lindenwood extended the margin to 5-2 midway through the second quarter before Mascolo scored with 4:17 remaining in the half to pull Coastal within 5-3 at the break.
The Lions pushed their advantage to 9-5 late in the third quarter, but the Chanticleers responded with three straight goals spanning the end of the third and start of the fourth. Goals from Beaudet, Mascolo, Erb and another from Beaudet tied the game at 9-9 with 13:58 to play.
Lindenwood rebuilt the lead to 11-9 with a pair of goals in the final two minutes.
Charlotte Sadler made eight saves in goal for the Chanticleers, who converted 17-of-18 clear attempts and committed 11 turnovers. Lindenwood held a 15-7 edge in draw controls.
