Volleyball Edged By NC State In Five Sets

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina took a 2-1 lead before NC State rallied to hand the Chanticleers a 3-2 loss Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Chanticleer Classic at the HTC Center.
The Wolfpack (9-2) won the opening set 25-21 before Coastal (4-5) responded with victories of 25-18 and 25-21. NC State forced a deciding set with a 25-13 win in the fourth and completed the comeback with a 15-10 victory in the fifth.
Coastal trailed 10-6 in the second set before battling back to tie the score at 11. Consecutive kills by Anna Rita gave the Chants a 15-12 lead, and Jonna Spohn's service ace later extended the margin to 18-14.
The Chanticleers closed the set on a 10-6 run, with Rita recording the final CCU kill before an NC State attack error secured the 25-18 win. Coastal finished with 16 kills and a .382 hitting percentage in the frame while holding the Wolfpack to a .000 clip.
The third set featured 11 ties and five lead changes. NC State held a 17-14 advantage before Coastal used a 5-1 run to move in front 19-18. Isabele Filardo then sparked a 4-0 run with an ace before Natalie Hughes contributed a kill and a solo block to give the Chants a 23-19 lead.
Hughes delivered another kill on set point to finish the 25-21 victory and give Coastal a 2-1 lead in the match. The Chanticleers recorded six blocks in the third set and held NC State to a .029 hitting percentage.
After the Wolfpack controlled the fourth set, Coastal opened the fifth with a 4-1 run behind two kills from Hughes, a block by Kaylee Musick and a kill by Anzley Rinard. NC State answered to take a 5-4 lead, and the teams traded points until a block by Hughes and Hatteras Welker tied the score at 8.
The Wolfpack scored the next four points to take control and closed the set on a 7-2 run.
Hughes and Rinard led Coastal with 12 kills apiece. Hughes hit .375 and finished with a match-high seven blocks, while Rita added nine kills with a .375 hitting percentage.
Welker recorded six blocks as Coastal finished with a season-high 12 team blocks. Musick handed out 37 assists and added six digs, three blocks and two aces. Spohn led the Chants with 10 digs and two aces.
Coastal outhit NC State .188 to .162 and held the Wolfpack below .100 in three of the five sets.
