Joey King joined head coach Jamey Chadwell’s staff in February 2019 after five seasons as the head coach at Cartersville High School in Cartersville, Ga. where he led the Purple Hurricanes to a 67-4 overall record, two state championships and four state title games.
King will coach the Chanticleer wide receivers.
In his first season at CCU in 2019, the Coastal Carolina offense recorded over 400 yards of total offense five times, including a season-high 636 yards in the road win at UMass. The Chants were 23-for-29 (79.3 percent) on fourth-down attempts which was the second-best percentage both nationally and in the Sun Belt, while the 23 fourth-down conversions were tied for the third-most nationally behind only Army and Navy with 26.
The CCU offense also ranked first in the Sun Belt in time of possession (33:24), first in completion percentage (65.0 percent), fifth in third-down conference percentage (40.7 percent), and fifth in sacks allowed (1.67 per game).
His wide receiver group had six different Chants record over 100 receiving yards on the season, led by sophomore Jaivon Heligh who went on to earn All-Sun Belt honorable mention honors. Heiligh led the team in receptions (46) and receiving yards (497), and was second in receiving touchdowns (3) on the season. He also led the team with an average of 41.7 receiving yards per game and hauled in at least one pass in all 12 games on the season, extending his streak to 15-straight games with at least one reception dating back to the 2018 season. Heiligh was one of just 21 players in the entire conference to record a 100-yard receiving game, recording 107 receiving yards on 12 catches in the 36-35 come-from-behind win over Troy, while his 12 receptions versus Troy were the most in a single game by a Chanticleer in the program's history.
Redshirt senior Ky' Jon Tyler, who earned 2019 Phil Steele Sun Belt Conference All-Conference third team honors on special teams, caught 23 passes for 203 yards and one touchdown despite missing three games due to injury. He was third on the team in all-purpose yards with 481, as he returned seven punts for 142 yards, an average of 20.3 yards per attempt, including running one back for 72 yards at ULM.
Fellow wideouts Jeremiah Miller (19 receptions, 248 yards, 1 TD), T'Qele Holmes (13 receptions, 112 yards), Jai Williams (9 receptions, 136 yards, 2 TDs), and Larry Collins Jr. (8 receptions, 122 yards) all had over 100 receiving yards on the season and averaged eight yards or more per catch.
A former South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year and AFCA Allstate Good Works Team member while playing quarterback at Carson-Newman, King reached 50 wins faster than any coach in Georgia High School football history.
He served as the offensive coordinator in the annual US Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 6, 2019.
Prior to his five years at Cartersville, where he was instrumental in the development of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who led Clemson University to an undefeated record and the NCAA national championship in 2018 just one year after graduating from Cartersville, King coached at Carrollton and Sonoraville high schools after beginning his coaching career at Jacksonville State University.
King is a native of Cedartown, Ga. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Carson-Newman University in Tennessee in 2005 and a master’s degree and Education Specialist degree from Jacksonville State.
While at Carson-Newman, King was a member of three NCAA playoff teams and three South Atlantic Conference championship teams.
