Trey Rakes joined the Chanticleer basketball program in 2021 as the Video Coordinator. It is not Rakes’ first time being on the Coastal Carolina campus as he spent two seasons (2017-19) as a graduate assistant.
Rakes rejoined the Chants following two seasons as the associate head coach at Colby Community College where he helped lead the Trojans to the program’s first Jayhawk West regular-season title and finishing the season with a 27-5 record and receiving a bid to the team’s first national tournament in program history.
Six players were named all-conference led by conference offensive and defensive player-of-the-year Demarcus Sharp, who was also named a first-team All-American.
During his previous time at Coastal, Rakes assisted in the development of All-Sun Belt performer Zac Cuthbertson and the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, DeVante’ Jones.
Rakes played college basketball four years at the University of Pikeville where he was a two-year starter and also served as captain. During his career the Bears finished with a 112-23 record, which was the best four-year run in Pikeville’s history.
He helped lead the Bears to two Mid-South conference titles and the Bears qualified for the NAIA National Tournament all four years, two of which resulted in Elite 8 appearances. Off the court he earned the Mid-South Conference Champion of Character award.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and he went on to earn a master’s degree in sports management from Coastal Carolina.
Rakes is a native of Louisville, Ky. His brother Corey played football at the Air Force Academy, and another brother Bailey played basketball at Centre College. His dad JuneBug Rakes was a member of the 1990 Kentucky Wesleyan College basketball team that won the Division II national championship.
