CONWAY, S.C.— Both teams had plenty of chances, but neither could find the back of the net as Coastal Carolina's women's soccer team battled through two overtimes in a scoreless tie against Birmingham Southern Saturday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium. The Panthers are the Big South's newest member, but are not yet competing in conference games.

Playing in a steady rain through much of regulation, each team struggled to maintain possession of the ball on the slick surface. The Lady Chants (0-7-2) dominated play through the first 30 minutes, but suffered through a series of near misses. The best opportunity may have come in the 26th minute as Panther goalkeeper Tally Ewing was caught out of position, but CCU's Jennifer Tafel had her blast into the open net blocked by a charging defender.

``We went back to the drawing board and came out with a new system of play,'' Coastal coach Karrie Miller said. ``We went with a sweeper tonight, which is something that we did a lot last year. I think we came out with more confidence and looked much more comfortable then we have been, and played one of our best games of the year.''

After being outshot 8-2 in the first half, Birmingham Southern (3-3-2) began to turn the tide, taking eight shots of its own in the second half, and all six in the second overtime to give them a 16-15 edge for the match. However, both goalkeepers were up to the task as Candice Doten made nine saves for Coastal and Ewing registered six for BSC, including a spectacular diving save on Jill Delano's 32-yard blast off a direct kick late in the first half.

The Panthers watched their best chance to score slip away with just under three minutes remaining in regulation, as a scramble in front of Coastal's net left the ball on Eyrun Oddsdottir's foot, only to have her miss an open net from six yards out.

``We played well, but obviously we didn't finish our chances,'' Miller said. ``That's something that you either do or you don't, and a lot of times its luck. And we haven't had much of that.''
