Men's Soccer Defeats College of Charleston 2-0

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — Coastal Carolina University's men's soccer team scored a 2-0 shutout victory over the College of Charleston to capture the championship in the 2001 Carolina Youth Development Center Men's Soccer Classic on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point Field.

Freshman Charlie Roberts scored the only goal the Chanticleers would need at 27:30. Sophomore Joseph Ngwenya added an insurance goal with less than six minutes remaining in the match on an assist from Thomas Rutter.

Coastal, which defeated The Citadel 4-0 on Friday in the opening game of the tournament, improves to 7-6-1. The Cougars fall to 4-10-1 on the season.

In Saturday's consolation match, Elon University got goals from five different players as
the Phoenix cruised to a 5-1 win over The Citadel.

The Phoenix, 7-9-0, opened the scoring when Paul Bellaqua hammered home a pass from Robert Latimer less than three minutes into the match.

Trailing 2-0 at the half, Citadel scored its only goal of the match when Cody Bragg found the back of the net at 68:47.

Elon added goals by Robert Latimer, Stuart Reid and Kyle Edwards in the last twenty minutes for the final margin. The Citadel, 0-14-0 on the season, was outshot by Elon 29-17.
