Women's Basketball Defeated By Winthrop,65-56
ROCK HILL, S.C. — Janette Arrington’s 16 points and 11 rebounds led the Winthrop women’s basketball team to its second straight Big South Conference win as it downed Coastal Carolina 65-56, Thursday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Winthrop held on to a nine-point halftime lead to improve to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the conference, moving them into fifth place.
In the first half the Lady Eagles built as big a lead as 14 points with 1:03 remaining, but a jumper by Rebekah Ingle and then a three-pointer with five seconds remaining in the half by Nikki Reddick made it only a single-digit lead at the break for Winthrop.
The Lady Eagles increased their lead back to 14 points twice in the second half. Then Coastal Carolina (6-11, 2-4) fought back with 15:24 left in the game. The Chanticleers outscored Winthrop 19-7 over the next seven minutes to pull within two points. However, Winthrop held off Coastal Carolina down the stretch.
From the free throw line, Winthrop struggled as it was 21-for-35 (60 percent). Coastal Carolina also struggled, hitting only 65 percent. Defensively Winthrop managed to hold the Chanticleers to 35 percent shooting from the field and forced 20 turnovers.
Arrington’s 11 rebounds were a career-high and it was her first career double-double. Stephanie Pannell added 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Laura Herman and Charlotta Wennefors added 10 points each.
Reddick led Coastal Carolina with a game-high 28 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 4-for-7 from downtown. Courtney Brown added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Winthrop will look to extend its winning streak to three games on Saturday as it visits UNC Asheville for a 2 p.m. match-up. Coastal will travel to Charleston Southern for a 7:00 p.m. contests with the Lady Buccaneers.
