Volleyball falls to Winthrop, 3-1

ROCK HILL , S.C.-- Freshman Mary Hock (Garland, Texas) posted 28 kills to help third-seeded Winthrop advance to the Big South Volleyball Championship title match for the first time since 1988 with a 3-1 upset of second-seeded Coastal Carolina.

The Lady Eagles defeated Coastal 24-30, 30-28, 30-27 and 30-28 to improve to 27-10, while the Lady Chants close out their season at 21-11. Winthrop will face fourth-seeded Liberty in Saturday’s title match at 2:00 pm. The winner of that match will advance to the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.

Hock’s 28 kills lead the Lady Eagles. She was joined in double figures by junior Logan Pierce (Durango, Col.) with 19 kills and 21 digs and junior Lindsey Remmers (Filley, Neb.) with 11 kills and eight block assists. Sophomore setter Odette Parris (Jackson, Calif.) had 62 assists, while senior Amy Coccia (Rock Hill, S.C.) finished with 17 digs for Winthrop.

Coastal Carolina cruised to a win in game one, but faltered in game two, falling behind 4-0 to start the match. The Lady Chants came back and took a 17-13 lead midway through the game. But Winthrop surged back ahead to win the game and even the match one. The Lady Eagles fell behind by as much as six points (14-8) in game three, but rallied late to win the game. Winthrop finished off the victory by scoring six of the final seven points in game four.

Coastal Carolina placed four players in double-figure kills. Senior Katie Knutson (Fort Erie, Ont., Canada) had 19 kills and 15 digs. Senior Jeanne Lambert (Burnsville, Minn.), junior Sarah Bennett (Eagan, Minn.) and senior Lauren Wozniak (Baden, Penn.) all finished with 12 kills. Lambert had 14 digs and Bennett had 10 digs. Freshman setter Jennifer Hampton (El Toro, Calif.) had 53 assists and 11 digs.

Coastal's season ends at 21-11.
