Box Score Top-Seed Coastal Falls to Liberty 7-3 ROCK HILL, S.C. — Fifth-seeded Liberty upset top-seeded Coastal Carolina 7-3, Friday evening at the McAlister’s Deli 2002 Big South Conference Championship.
Lauren Hauhn’s grandslam in the first inning set the tone for the Flames (26-33). Hauhn finished with five RBIs in the game.
Coastal Carolina’s Stephanie Belden, the 2002 Big South Conference Player of the Year, was roughed up for five runs on four hits in three innings of work.
The Chanticleers (27-18), who swept the season series with Liberty without allowing a run, allowed seven runs on nine hits. Coastal Carolina only managed six hits, but did leave nine runners on base and even had the bases loaded in the fifth inning, but Suzanne Kimbrell struck out to end the threat.
Liberty’s Ali Thompson tossed a complete game allowing all three runs on six hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Allison Terry was 3-for-4 with two runs and Mary Beth Kennell also collected two hits.
Coastal Carolina was led by Amanda DeGrendele who was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Karyle Fortune also had an RBI.
Liberty advances in the winner’s bracket and will play Elon at 5 p.m. and Coastal Carolina will play at 1 p.m. against Charleston Southern in the loser’s bracket.
