Men's Soccer Blanks Winthrop, 4-0 CONWAY, S.C. – Jordie Hughes and
Joseph Ngwenya each scored two goals in the 13th-ranked Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team’s 4-0 victory over Big South rival Winthrop, Wednesday, at CCU Soccer Field. The victory, which is Coastal’s fourth straight, lifts the Chants to 11-2-0 and 3-1-0 in the Big South. Winthrop drops to 8-4-1 and 3-2-0 in the conference.
Hughes kicked off the scoring with a goal in the 29th minute off a crisp pass from Ngwenya, marking his eighth goal of 2003 and Ngwenya’s 11th assist. The remainder of the first half passed without another goal from either team, and Coastal entered the second half holding the 1-0 lead.
It took the Chants only six minutes after the start of the second period to score again, as Ngwenya sent a ball past Eagles’ keeper Patrick O’Callaghan courtesy of an assist from Boyzzz Khumalo. Hughes would then find the back of the Winthrop goal once more as he scored his ninth goal of the season 11 minutes later, this time with Mubarike Chisoni contributing his sixth assist of 2003.
Ngwenya scored the Chants’ fourth and final goal after O’Callaghan committed a foul directly in front of the Eagles’ goal and Coastal was awarded a penalty kick.
O’Callaghan tended Winthrop’s net the entire 90 minutes and recorded four saves, while Coastal keeper Andy Paxton played the majority of the match, only facing three shots.
Coastal outshot Winthrop 22-3, 10-2 on goal, led by Ngwenya with seven shots. Three different Eagles recorded shots.
The Chanticleers are back on the pitch this Saturday as they continue Big South play against Radford. Game time, which was changed from 7 p.m., is 5 p.m. at CCU Soccer Field.
