Football Wins on the Road at Savannah State, 29-19

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Coastal Carolina put together its first back-to-back victories in its young history with a 29-19 victory at Savannah State, Oct. 25.

Coastal got on the board first, but on the defensive end of the field, as the Chanticleers forced SSU punter Kyle McCrery to throw the ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety and give the visitors a 2-0 lead just 1:31 into the game.

The Chants also scored 10 more points in the opening stanza, first on a 24-yard field goal by Josh Hoke and then on a Tyler Thigpen 31-yard scramble for a CCU touchdown to give Coastal a 12-0 lead.

Savannah State answered midway through the second quarter with their first touchdown in seven games, as Clyde Tullis capitalized on a CCU turnover by diving over from a yard out to cut the lead to 12- 7 at the intermission.

The Chants added to their lead with a Hoke 40-yard field goal, his season long, on the opening drive of the second half for a 15-7 margin.

Aundres Perkins' then had the next score on a 15- yard run and Hoke's extra point made it 22-7 with 5:22 to play in the third. However, the Tigers clawed back on Tullis' 17-yard touchdown pass to Tarik Maxwell just 51 seconds later to cut the margin back to 22-13.

Coastal Carolina responded on its next drive by going 75 yards in 3:01, capped by Perkins' second touchdown of the game, this one on a 21- yard run, to make the margin 29-13.

After another Coastal miscue, SSU scored on a fumble recovery of their own run in the end zone to make it 29-19 with just under eight minutes to go in the game.

The Tigers also had chances late, but dropped a sure touchdown catch on a fourth-down play and later fumbled another ball in the end zone that CCU recovered to put the game away.

Perkins finished the game with his fourth 100-yard game this year, going 105 yards on 12 carries with a pair of touchdowns. Patrick Hall added 68 yards on 10 carries, while Thigpen had nine carries for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Thigpen also was 9-for-19 passing for 87 yards, completing four of those to Darnell Williams for 49 yards.

Savannah State was led by Tullis, who was 13-for-21 through the air for 230 yards and a touchdown, while also adding a touchdown on the ground. Tawfiq Ramsey was the ground leader for SSU, going seven carries for 46 yards, while Maxwell hauled in four catches for 73 yards and a touchdown
