Volleyball Defeats UNCA in Four Games

CONWAY, S.C.– The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (15-9, 6-2 Big South) hit .297 for the match and capped Senior Night with a 3-1 win over the University of North Carolina at Asheville (13-7, 7-3 Big South) Nov. 1, in Conway, S.C. The Lady Chants defeated the Bulldogs by scores of 30-28, 24-30, 31-29 and 30-22.

Game one was tight throughout until a mini 4-0 run put the Lady Chants up 26-23. Senior Sarah Bennett (Eagan, Minn./Eagan), recognized after the match on Senior Night, had the game-winning kill to take the opener 30-28. Game two started Coastal’s way as the Lady Chants were up 7-1 early. But Asheville went on an 11-3 run and never looked back. Suzanne Aubel and Amanda Wiles came through with an assisted block to end the game.

Game three saw Coastal take a 20-15 lead but Asheville came back and led late 27-24. Two kills by sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) and one by freshman Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) tied the game and Obert’s two kills put Coastal up for good. Coastal hit .391 in the third game. The Lady Chants then hit .378 in game four to take the 30-22 lead and the win. Coastal ended the game scoring 10 of the last 15 points.

Jensen had 18 kills and was one of five players in double digits in digs with 20. Bennett had 13 kills and 17 digs, while freshman Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) had 16 kills and 17 digs. It is the second straight match that all three Chants recorded double-doubles.

Obert also came through with 14 kills and three block assists. Freshman Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) had 16 digs, while sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had 62 assists and 16 digs.

UNC Asheville was led by Elif Unlu with 16 kills. UNCA also had five players in double figures in digs, as Kelly Budnik had 16. The Bulldogs played without the services of Frida Sigurdardottir for the second straight match.

With the win, Coastal moved percentage points ahead of Winthrop University and Asheville for second place in the Big South Conference.

Coastal wraps up the home schedule Sunday, Nov. 2, against Birmingham-Southern College. Match time is at 2 p.m.
