LYNCHBURG, Va.– In a showdown of the top two teams in the Big South Conference, the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (17-10, 8-3 Big South) won the first game over Liberty University (19-10, 10-1 Big South) 30-20 Nov. 8, in Lynchburg, Va., but the Flames came back to win the next three games and end the Lady Chants winning streak at five matches. Liberty won the last three games by scores of 30-19, 30-22 and 30-27.

The Lady Chants hit .316 in the first game and had only one hitting error in the 30-20 win. Coastal also forced the Flames into 12 hitting errors and a .140 hitting percentage. Coastal would then hit only .171 in the second game, compared to .417 for Liberty in the 30-20 win.

The Flames never lost the lead in game three, winning 30-22, while Liberty scored six of game four’s final nine points to take a 30-27 win.

Senior Sarah Bennett (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) led the squad with 14 kills and added seven digs. Sophomore Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) added 13 kills, while sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) had 12 kills, but failed to record a double-double for the first time in 13 matches. Freshman Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) was the fourth Lady Chant in double figures in kills with 10.

Freshman Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) was the only Coastal player in double figures in digs with 12. Obert had three blocks while sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had 42 assists.

Liberty was led by Erin McKeown’s 20 kills. Kristin Colson had 62 assists and 17 digs.

Coastal heads to Charleston, S.C., to face Charleston Southern University Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m.
