Box Score 2 Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Winthrop
ROCK HILL, SC — In a tale of two games, Coastal Carolina outlasted Winthrop in a 12-11 slugfest and then defeated the Eagles 4-2 in a pitching duel to sweep a doubleheader from Winthrop in front of 1,905 in attendance, the largest crowd in Winthrop baseball history.
In game one, Tyler Hasbrouck’s two-run home run in the ninth inning broke a 10-10 tie and lifted the Chanticleers to a 12-11 victory over the Eagles.
Byron Binda (4-1) picked up the win for CCU, giving up one run in two-thirds of an inning in relief. He struck out one and walked one.
Kevin Slowey (4-2) gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits in four and two-thirds innings of relief work to take the loss for the Eagles.
Game one of the doubleheader saw 23 total runs and 28 combined hits with four lead changes and two ties. It lasted three hours and 14 minutes, and was also delayed for an hour and 24 minutes due to rain.
Matt Matkovich led the Eagles offensively in game one, going four for five with three RBI and two runs scored. He hit two home runs in the game.
Kyle Roberson, Bennett Stapf and Alan Robbins also had two hits apiece for Winthrop. Roberson also drove in three runs.
CCU starting pitcher Justin Sturge held Winthrop at bay in game two, limiting the Eagles to one run in six innings of work to lead the Chanticleers to a 4-2 victory.
Sturge (8-2) gave up just one run on five hits to pick up the win for CCU. He struck out nine and walked just three.
Byron Binda gave up one run in the seventh to close the game out for the Chanticleers and pick up his second save of the season.
Jeremy Plexico (8-3) took the loss for the Eagles, giving up four runs on six hits in a complete game performance. He struck out six and walked two.
Matkovich was the only Eagle with more than one hit in game two, going three for three at the plate with a run scored.
CCU improved to 31-11 overall and 6-3 in Big South Conference play with the pair of wins, while Winthrop fell to 26-17 overall and 10-3 in BSC action.
The two teams wrap up the three-game series, Sun., at 2 p.m.
