Box Score Baseball Edges Liberty, 5-4
CONWAY, SC — Freshman Mike Costanzo drove in the eventual game-winner with a RBI-single to right field, to help the Coastal Carolina baseball team complete the series sweep of Liberty, with a 5-4 victory over the Flames in Big South Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Watson Stadium.
The Chanticleers, winners of six straight, improve to 37-12 overall, 9-4 in the Big South, while Liberty falls to 14-32 overall, 7-12 in the Big South.
Freshman Josh Fish (1-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing three innings allowing no runs, while striking out three. Sophomore Stephen Williams (3-2) suffered the loss allowing the game-winner in the eighth inning.
For the third straight game, Liberty scored in the first inning. Chad Bryan would drive in the first run of the day on a single to center scoring Doug Bechtold who reached on a two base error. Two batters later, Daniel Bote would drive in a pair with his double to right center.
The Chants would cut into the early Liberty lead with two runs of its own in the second inning both from a double by Costanzo. CCU would then tie the game at 3-3 in the third inning when sophomore Brett Grandstrand scored from third off \Brandon Powell's groundout to second.
The Flames would retake the lead with a run in the sixth when junior Jeremiah Boles drove in Josh Carter with his groundout to the shortstop.
Coastal would then tie it up in the seventh when Grandstrand singled in Chad Oxendine from second.
Coastal will next entertain College of Charleston in a non-conference tilt, on Wednesday, May 7, at 5 p.m. at Watson Stadium. Liberty will face VCU on Saturday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at The Diamond in Richmond, Va.
