Box Score Volleyball Takes Two at CCU Tournament CONWAY, S.C.– The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (6-6) defeated East Carolina University (8-8) and Bethune-Cookman College (3-9) on the second day of the CCU Tournament Sept. 20, in Conway, S.C. The Lady Chants beat the Pirates by scores of 30-21, 30-26 and 30-26 and the Lady Wildcats by scores of 30-8, 30-14 and 34-32.
Against East Carolina, the Lady Chants hit. 294 for the match in defeating the Pirates in three games. Three Coastal players were in double figures in kills, led by senior Sarah Bennett’s (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) 14. Sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) and freshman Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) had 11 kills apeice.
Sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) led the Chants defense with 17 digs. Hampton also had 44 assists. Jensen led the team and the match with five service aces, while sophomore Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had four blocks (one solo, three assisted).
Against Bethune-Cookman, the Lady Chants took care of the Lady Wildcats in the first two games and then battled to win a hard fought third game. Coastal hit. 400 in the first game and .367 in the second game, compared to .000 for the Lady Wildcats. Every player in uniform saw action for Coastal as nine player had at least one kill and 10 players had at least one dig.
Jensen had 12 kills to lead the Chants. Senior Carly Draudt (Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita) added 10. Jensen also was in double figures in digs with 10. Coastal hit .323 for the game and .237 for the tournament.
Jensen and Hampton were named to the CCU All-Tournament Team along with Eastern Michigan’s Emily Busch and Lauren Viney and East Carolina’s Johanna Bertini. Eastern’s Jen Nighswander was the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Coastal continues its 12-game homestand Tuesday, Sept. 23, against the University of North Carolina at Wilmington at 7 p.m., in Kimbel Arena.
