Volleyball Defeats Charlotte in Three Games

Box Score Volleyball Defeats Charlotte in Three Games

CONWAY, S.C.– The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (9-6) won its fifth straight match Sept. 27, with a 3-0 win over the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (6-11) in Conway, S.C. The Lady Chants defeated the 49ers by scores of 30-23, 30-21 and 30-23. Coastal also has a 15-game winning streak dating back to Sept. 19.

In a game one that featured 10 ties and six lead changes, a late Coastal run gave the Lady Chants the 30-23 win. Charlotte had a lead as late as 11-10 and the game was always within three points until a 3-0 run capped off by an ace from sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) that gave Coastal a 21-1 lead. The two teams traded points until at 26-23 Coastal, the Lady Chants had a kill by senior Carly Draudt (Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita), two attack errors by the 49ers and a bad set error ended the game. Coastal hit .429 in the game, led by sophomore Katherine Jensen’s (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) five kills.

Coastal continued its hot hitting in the second game to take the 30-21 advantage. Charlotte took a 5-2 early lead, but Coastal came back to take seven of the next eight points to build a 9-6 lead. A 10-9 lead quickly went to 20-12 as the 49ers had 11 attack errors in the game. Jensen ended the game with a kill, one of her eight in the game. Senior Sarah Bennett (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) also had four digs in the game.

Coastal actually was outhit .237-.216 in game three but four Coastal aces and five Charlotte errors gave the Lady Chants the 30-23 win. Sophomore Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had two aces, while Hampton and freshman Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) tallied one each. Kimbel and Obert also had a solo block apiece. Bennett was a perfect 4-of-4 in attacks while Jensen had four digs.

Jensen had her second straight double double and her seventh straight match with double-figure kills, as she had 17 kills and 10 digs. Bennett added seven kills and a team-high 11 digs. Hampton had 37 assists for the Lady Chants. Coastal hit .300 for the game, compared to .197 for Charlotte.

Jessica Kelly led Charlotte with 13 kills, while Molly McDonald had 37 assists.

Coastal steps back into Big South play Tuesday, Sept. 30, against Charleston Southern University. That match starts at 7 p.m., in Kimble Arena.
