Box Score Volleyball Falls to Western Carolina in Three Games

CULLOWHEE, N.C. The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (1-3) fell to host Western Carolina University (1-3) in three games on the first night of the Catamount Clash Sept. 5, in Cullowhee, N.C. The Lady Chants fell by scores of 26-30, 21-30 and 28-30.
Coastal fell behind early in game one as the Catamounts built a 14-3 lead. The Lady Chants hit .032 in game one, compared to .193 for Western Carolina. In game two, WCU hit .245 as the Catamounts had 19 kills to win 30-21. Coastal had a 21-20 lead in the third game, but five straight points by WCU gave them a lead they would never relinquish in winning 30-28.
Sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) led the Lady Chants with 12 kills, while senior Sarah Bennett (Eagen, Minn./Eagen) was the other Coastal player in double digits with 10 kills. Freshman Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) was one of five CCU players in double figures in digs with 20. Sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had 21 assists and 14 digs for Coastal.
For the match, CCU hit .072 on 35 kills and 24 errors. WCU outblocked the Lady Chants 7-4.
The Lady Chants will close out the Catamount Clash Saturday, Sept. 6, with contests against Tennessee State University at 11 a.m., and Savannah State University at 3 p.m.
