Coastal Carolina (9-6, 3-3 Big South) men’s soccer team continues its Big South schedule with a home match against High Point University, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. This will be the last conference game and will carry quite a bit of weight with it. If Coastal wins the game it can move as high as a second seed in next weeks Big South Conference tournament. But before next weeks tournament, CCU will take to the road this weekend, as it travels to participate in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Soccer Classic in Charleston, S.C. with a pair of match beginning Friday, Nov. 5, against South Carolina at 5 p.m. The Chanticleers last game of the week and the regular season will be against the host school, College of Charleston, at 3:30 p.m on Sunday, November 7.
Scouting High Point
High Point (7-10-1 2-4 Big South) arrives at this game coming off a win over Big South Conference leader Birmingham-Southern, 4-1. Leading the charge for the Panthers was forward Chris Archer who tallied two goals. High Point played its interstate rival UNC-Greensboro, the current number one team in the country, last Wednesday and were nipped in overtime, 2-1. HPU is lead by junior Archer who has conference highs with 13 goals and 29 points. Junior Patrick Althoff has tallied 18 points this season and freshman Josh Windley has also talied double figures with 12 points. Coastal has dominated the all-time series between the two teams with a 6-1 advantage.
Scouting South Carolina
South Carolina (10-5-1) are the 25th ranked team in the country and seemto be peaking at the right time as they knocked off conference rival and the 13th ranked team in the country in Duke University on Sunday, Oct. 31, 1-0. The lone goal of the game was scored by freshman Sebastian Lindholm. The Gamecocks have a balanced attacked with four players in double figures in points this season led by Lindholm’s 11. Tallying 10 points are sophomore Ayo Akinsete, junior Eric Szeszycki and junior Josh Alacala. Sophomore goalkeeper Brad Guzan has been the only Gamecock to appear in goal this season and has five shutouts. Coastal holds a slight advantage in the all-time series at 3-2-1.
Scouting College of Charleston
College of Charleston (11-5-1 5-1-1 Southern Conference) are coming off a loss against the nationally number one ranked team in country, in UNC-Greensboro over the weekend, 3-1. The loss snapped the Cougars seven game unbeaten streak. The Cougars have one more game against Alabama-A & M on Friday, Nov.5, before taking on CCU at Patriots Point in Charleston, S.C. C of C have a balanced attack with four players reaching double-figure point totals this season with an additionally three having nine point totals. Leading the charge for the Cougars is senior Troy Lesesne, who has 16 points, and senior Tony Myers, who has 14 points. Coastal owns a career record of 10-4-3 against College of Charleston. The last meeting occuring in 2002 was a scoreless tie between the two teams.
Last Week in Review
Winthrop
Junior Jordie Hughes, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, scored two first half goals and Coastal (9-6, 3-3 Big South) held on for 2-0 victory over conference rival Winthrop on Saturday evening in Rock Hill, S.C. Hughes scored his first goal of the evening less than a minute into the action (:53) unassisted off a steal in the back court to give Coastal a 1-0 lead.Hughes would strike again (30:29) when he took a pass across the baseline from senior Boyzzz Khumalo and freshman Lachlan Cahill for his second goal of the night to give CCU a 2-0 lead, in what would be the final margin of victory. Freshman goalkeeper Jeremy Wolfgang registered his second consecutive win and his third win of the season. It was fifth shutout of the season recorded by Chanticleers goalkeepers this season.
Big South Tournament
If the season ended today Coastal would be the 7th seed but CCU has the opportunity to move all the way to the second seed if they can defeat High Point on Wednesday afternoon. If they win they would be tied with Winthrop and Liberty with a conference mark of 4-3 and win the tie breaking over both those teams because they defeated them in head-head competion. A loss though would drop them to eighth place by virtue of losing the tiebreaker to High Point and Asheville.
Dynamic Trio
Senior midfielder Mubarike Chisoni has been outstanding in his first sixteen games of the season scoring 11 goals, including a game winner, and registering five assists. Chisoni has registered the first two hat tricks of his career already this year with one against Anderson and Louisville. For his great performance he was named to the National Player of the Week Team by College Soccer News for the week of Sept. 5. Fellow senior Boyzzz Khumalo has also played well as he has tallied six goals, including two game winner against Furman and Harvard, and registered nine assists on the season, which is among the national leaders. JuniorJordie Hughes has put together an outstanding year with nine goals and nine assists, for 27 points.
All-Tournament Honors
Two Chanticleers were honored with places on the UNCG/adidas All-Tournament Team, Oct. 17. Senior midfielder Mubarike Chisoni and fellow senior forward Boyzzz Khumalo were both awarded with places on the All-Tournament Team.
In leading Coastal to a third place finish in the Clemson/Nike Invitational,Oct. 3, senior Dario Grassini was named to the All-Tournament Team along with fellow defender freshman Patrick Robertson. Grassini scored the game winning goal against Hofstra in a thrilling 3-2 victory on Oct. 1.
Players of the Week
Jordie Hughes became the lastest Coastal men’s soccer player to be named Player of the Week on Oct. 26. He was honored for his performance against VMI when he registered two goals and and assist. Previously, .Boyzzz Khumalo was named Player of the Week in the Big South Conference for the week of Sept. 6-12. Khumalo had a great week with three goals scored and four assists tallied. That was the second consecutive week a Chant had captured the honor, with Mubarike Chisioni taking home the award for the week of August 30-Sept. 5. Chisoni scored four goals and registered three assists during the week as Coastal opened the 2004 campaign with a pair of wins.
Career Marks
Boyzzz Khumalo with ten assists this season, has now amassed 20 career assists, which ties him for 10th all-time with former Chant Russell Herrity.
Mubarike Chisoni, with the five assists he has totaled this season, now has 23 career assists, which is seventh on the Chants All-Time assist list.
Jordie Hughes with the nine goals he has totaled this season is now 10th on Coastal all-time goal scoring list as junior with 29 career goals
Among the NCAA Leaders
Boyzzz Khumalo is ranked among the top ten nationally with the ten assists he has registered this year.
Teammate Jordie Hughes is right behind him in the nationally rankings with his nine assists this season.
Team Ranking
Coastal soccer excels at getting many players involved, as it leads the Big South Conference by tallying 2.44 assists per game. Coastal also is the hardest team to score against in the conference with a goals against average of 1.05. The most goals the Chants goalkeepers have allowed in any single game is two and as a team it is tied for the lead in the conference with five shutouts this season. Coastal is third in the conference by averaging 2.25 goals per game.
Self Control
The Chants have shown themselves to be a poised bunch, with only sixteen yellow card on the season, which is the lowest in the league.
Individual Rankings
Jordie Hughes leads the conference by register multi-assists in three games this season and is tied for the lead in the conference with four muli-goal games . Mubarike Chisoni is also tied for second in the conference with two multi-goal games and 12th in NCAA in points per game.
Watch List
Coastal Carolina’s Boyzzz Khumalo is on the watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious individual honor in men’s soccer, the organization announced. The senior forward was also named to the College Soccer News Second Team Preseason All-American. Khumalo is coming off a 2003 season where he scored seven goals, including three game winners, and tallied 10 assists for 24 points. He also was a member of the 2003 First-Team All South Atlantic Region and a Third Team All-American by the NSCAA.
Honors
Former CCU star and current L.A. Galaxy forward Joseph Ngwenya was honored this past week, August 8, for his 2003 accomplishment by the Big South Conference when he received the Howard Bagwell Award, given to the most outstanding Men’s Player of Year for the 2003-2004 season. Ngwenya is coming off a season where he led the nation in scoring for the second consecutive season (56 points) and was one of three finalist for the Hermann Trophy while being honored as the 2003 Men’s Soccer National Soccer Player of the Year by Soccer America. He also earned his second-straight All-Big South award as well as being named the Big South Tournament’s MVP.

Coastal will participate in the Big South Tournament to be held in Birmingham, Ala. next week. Seeding and times will be determined after Coastal’s game against High Point.
