CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) pitched well for Coastal only giving up three runs in six innings but Coastal Carolina softball team (12-14) was defeated by North Carolina (20-14) in its second game of the Carolina Classic on Friday, Mar. 25.

The Tar Heels took the lead for good in the third inning as a bases loaded double by Whitney Gelin with two outs plated the first two runs of the evening to give North Carolina the early 2-0 lead.

CCU threatened in the sixth inning as junior Sara Hostetler (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) singled with one out but she was stranded at second base.

UNC would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as CCU saw itself facing an 3-0 deficit through six innings

The Chants attempted a late rally in the seven inning as junior Lynee Hastings (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) and sophomore Kim Cillis (Magnolia, Texas, Magnolia) walked back to back with one out to put runners on second and third. Freshman Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) hit a long fly ball that the North Carolina centerfielder, Erin Dudley, chased down on the warning track for the second out. Junior Brittany Nelson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) followed by hitting a single to the left side. But as the hard hit ball got away from the North Carolina third base man, Coastal pinch runner junior Irene Finley (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) was thwarted in her attempted to score and was thrown out at home to end the game.

UNC starter junior Crystal Cox was unscored upon for the game, only allowing four hits while striking out eleven. Gerdts saw her record drop to 2-4 on the season. Cox raises her record to 9-8 on the season.

Coastal will play a pair of games tommorrow, Mar. 25 at the Carolina Classic starting at 11:30 a.m. against Harvard. CCU will play a second game tommorrow against Penn State at 4:30 p.m.
