Box Score Baseball Rebounds with a 9-6 Win over Elon More Information:
The 22nd-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (34-10) scored eight runs in the third inning to rebound from last night’s loss and defeat Elon University (27-19) 9-6 April 30 in Elon, N.C.
Coastal scored a run in the first to take its first lead of the series. Senior Chris Todd (Seattle, Wash./Bellevue C.C.) walked to start the frame, as he reached base for the 46th straight game. Todd moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) and scored on a two-out single by junior Michael DeJesus (Manapalan, N.J./East Carolina).
The Phoenix tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Senior Jake Hurry (East Moline, Ill./Alleman) walked Gary Morris and Paul Bennett. Elon loaded the bases on a single by Chris Price and Morris scored on a ground ball double play from Evan Erickson.
Coastal exploded for eight runs in the top of the third, sending 12 batters to the plate. Todd started the inning with a walk and Duggan was hit in the head by a Matt Chastain pitch. A Costanzo walk loaded the bases and Todd scored on a DeJesus walk. Sophomore Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) drove in two with a double to right field. With one out, junior Mike Fuentes (Miami, Fla./North Florida C.C.) drove in DeJesus with a sacrifice fly. Coastal reloaded the bases on an infield single from senior Jon Foisy (Ridgecrest, Calif./Cerro Coso C.C.). The Chants made it 6-0 as Todd was hit by a pitch from Elon reliever George Blystone. Junior DJ Burns (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler Gilbert J.C.) brought in two runs on a single up the middle and junior Mike Costanzo (Springfield, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) brought in Todd on a single to right to end the scoring.
Elon cut the lead to 9-3 in the seventh on a two-run home run to left center by Chris Vasami.
The Phoenix made things interesting in the ninth. Matt Stocco walked and Vasami singled to open the inning. After senior Byron Binda (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) struck out Adam Weaver, Matt Hill was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stocco scored on an RBI groundout from Morris, making it 9-4. Two more runs came in on a throwing error by junior Aaron Verrett (Jupiter, Fla./Polk C.C.), but Binda got Price to ground out to end the game.
Hurry went eight innings for his seventh win of the season. He struck out seven and gave up seven hits and three earned runs. Matt Chastain took the loss, walking five and giving up five runs in two-plus innings.
Raber, Burns and DeJesus had two hits apiece for Coastal. Costanzo also extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Todd added three runs. For Elon, Vasami was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
