The Coastal Carolina University baseball team (14-19, 5-5 Big South) lost 13-10 to Birmingham-Southern College (18-14, 6-1 Big South) in an offensive see-saw battle April 14 in Conway, S.C. The Panthers scored six runs in the last two innings to earn their sixth Big South win. Birmingham-Southern put two up in the second. Brandon Hynick led off the inning with a hit by pitch. He moved to second on a groundout and went to third on a flyout. Matt Barber then stepped to the plate and hit a two-run home run. John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.) homered to the opposite field for his fourth longball of the season. The Chants tied the game in the third as junior

Adam Vrable (Bay City, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.). The Panthers responded with one in the fourth as Barber doubled to left to score Hynick. Birmingham-Southern plated two runs in the fifth. Mike Valter (Bloomingdale, N.J./Briarcliffe C.C.) got Billy Froehlich to ground into a double play, but Hynick reached on a fielding error by the Chants to score Billak and Goforth. Coastal put up six runs in the fifth and sent 10 men to the plate. Junior

Mike Fuentes (Miami, Fla./North Florida C.C.) brought all three runners home on a double to right field. Vrable brought in the sixth run on a single to center. The Panthers made it 8-7 with two runs in the sixth. Barber hit his second home run of the day with one out, a solo shot to left. Woods and Goforth both had two-out singles and freshman
David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) came in and walked Billak and Froelich to force in Woods. In the eighth, the Panthers score three runs to take the 10-8 lead. Woods walked to open the inning. He went to second on a single from Goforth. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout from Brint Hardy brought in Woods. With two out, Brett Ashley doubled to left to plate a pair and give the Panthers the lead. Coastal would answer in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 10. With two outs, Raber walked and Sappelt blasted a two-run home run to left field. The Chants could not hang on in the top of the ninth. Woods reached on an error and went to second on a single from Goforth. Billak loaded the bases with a single and the go-ahead run scored on a walk to Hardy. A single by Hynick plated two more to make it 13-10. The loss was charged to Mariotti, who struck out one Panther, but gave up four hits and two earned runs. Will Stroup earned the win, pitching the final 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and two runs. Valter went the first 5.2 innings, giving up 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out four. Raber and Vrable had three hits apiece, while Peacher and Fuentes had three RBI. For Birmingham-Southern, Goforth was 5-for-6 with three runs scored, while Barber had three hits and four RBI. Coastal and Birmingham-Southern will end the series with a doubleheader Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
