Box Score Softball Wins First Game of Aeropostale Big South Softball Tournament Defeats Birmingham-Southern 4-0
More Information:
RADFORD, VA. – Coastal Carolina’s softball team (36-20, 10-2 Big South) used a strong pitching performance by redshirt junior
Christine Doyle (Rio Rico, Ariz./Immaculate Heart Academy) to defeat fourth-seeded Birmingham-Southern (27-20, 7-5 Big South) 4-0 in the second round of the Aeropostale Big South Softball Tournament on Thursday, May 11 in Radford, Va.
Doyle was masterful for the top-seeded Lady Chanticleers, going the distance and only allowing two hits with six strikeouts.
Coastal took the early lead with a run in the first inning. Senior Sara Hostetler (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) took the second pitch of the inning over the left-center field wall to give the Lady Chanticleers a 1-0 advantage. For Hostetler, it was her third home run of the season.
The Lady Chants added a run in the second as junior Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) singled to left center with one out. She moved to second on Doyle's ground out and came in to score the second run on Glynn Tolleson's (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford) RBI double to left field.
Doyle continued to cruise into the fifth inning. The fifth frame ended in a very interesting manner, as Blaes Schmissrauter hit what would been a single, if not for the rifle throw from CCU right fielder Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) to get her out at first.
CCU added a pair in the fifth inning, as Tolleson singled up the middle. She moved to second on the Danyelle Gerdts sacrifice bunt. A Hostetler one-out single to right moved Tolleson to third. A ground out moved Hostetler to second as Tolleson stayed at third. Senior Kelly Feely (Livermore, Calif./Granada) drove in Tolleson and Hostetler with a double to left field.
Coastal will play in the Winners' Bracket final tomorrow at 5 p.m. against #2 seed Radford, who defeated #3 seed Liberty in the other second-round game, 7-4.
