Box Score Volleyball Falls to Winthrop, 3-1 More Information:
CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's volleyball team suffered its third straight loss on Saturday, Oct. 13, falling to Winthrop 3-1 at Kimbel Arena. Game scores were 11-30, 30-27, 17-30, 20-30.
Winthrop (11-9, 6-0 Big South) came out hot and dominated the first game with two separate ten-point runs.
Both teams battled for control of the second game as there were 10 ties. The final tie came as Winthrop evened the score at 22-22 off a Coastal (11-11, 3-3 Big South) service error. However, sophomore Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) broke the tie with a kill. With a two-point lead, Coastal used a crucial three-point run to take a 27-23 advantage. The Lady Chants held off a late Winthrop rally and scored the game-winning kill from freshman Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) to even the match at one-all.
Unfortunately, Coastal was not able to carryover its momentum from game two into the third and fourth games as Winthrop outhit Coastal .347 to .051 in the final two games.
Freshman Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) hit a team-best .312 (seven kills off 16 total attacks) and tallied six block assists. Kimes led Coastal totaled a team-high 11 kills. Sophomore Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) added 35 assists, while junior Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) had a match-high 22 digs.
Shannon Sitzmann paced the Eagles with a match-high 19 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Kelsey Hall put up 39 assists, while Kellie Sellers had 18 digs.
The Lady Chanticleers return to action on Tuesday night at the College of Charleston. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at John Kresse Arena.
