Men's Tennis Squeezes by The Citadel, 4-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team weathered the storm and came out victorious on a windy Sunday afternoon in Charleston as they took on The Citadel. The Chanticleers played the majority of the match in 40-mph winds with scattered showers to pick up their eighth victory of the season, making their overall record 8-2.

The two teams decided to play the singles matches first due to threats of extremely bad weather heading in Charleston's direction but the decision came down to the third and final doubles match of the night.

Coastal Carolina won the doubles point, which earned them the overall win, after the team of Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) defeated the Bulldog team of Martin King and Alberto Diaz, 9-7.

Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) also defeated Derek Jose and Frederic Petrilli 8-4 while Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen Mary's College) and Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) lost to Daniel Dossetor and James Eason,8-4.

The two teams split in singles action, the first three matches going to the Bulldogs and the second three going to the Chanticleers.

Mellis lost to Dossetor in number one singles, 6-0, 3-6, 6-0, Taylor fell to Eason 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2,  and Tzvetkov lost to Diaz 6-3, 6-3 at third position.

Redding got the first singles win on the day for the Chants after defeating Martin King in the number four spot, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Caress defeated Jose 7-6, 6-4 and Withers took down Petrilli 6-3, 6-4 at the final two positions.

"This was the wildest match I've ever experienced in my years as a coach," head coach Chris Powers commented. "The winds were howling at around 40 miles-per-hour and The Citadel fans were extremely rowdy but we kept our heads and fought out a great win. I'm so proud of our guys and of the program."
