Box Score 2 Softball Splits A Pair with Birmingham-Southern More Information:
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team opened a three-game series with Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, April 21. Coastal fell in the first with a score of 2-1, but won the second 9-6 with back-to-back home runs from
Glynn Tolleson and
Allison Cantrell. In the second game Coastal (16-30, 5-6 BSC) tied the score at one when
Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) hit her first of two home runs in the second inning. The Panthers (22-26, 4-7 BSC) plated three runs in the top of the third off four hits giving them a 4-1 advantage before second half of the inning. In the bottom of the third,
Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South) led off with a single through the left side.
Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and advanced to third on a single from
Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball).
Allison Cantrell (McDonough , Ga/Eagle’s Landing) then plated two runs with a single to right center. Sheppard then hit her second homer of the day over the center field fence that scored Cantrell and gave the Chants a 5-4 lead. Sheppard finished the game going 2-for-3 with home runs in back-to-back innings. In the fifth, Tolleson and Cantrell hit back-to-back home runs with two outs and went on top 7-4. Tolleson was 2-for-4 at the plate in game two. Coastal added two more in the sixth off an illegal pitch from BSC’s pitcher Raquel Sanfiel and an RBI single from Cantrell making it 9-4. Cantrell went 3-for-4 in the game with one homerun and a stolen base. The CCU defense allowed two BSC runs in the seventh, but held on for the 9-6 win over the Panthers. Danyelle Gerdts who threw in 6-1 innings and recorded three strikeouts. In game one, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning off an RBI single from Danielle Honore`.
Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) hit her fifth home run of the year over the left field fence in the sixth and tied that game at one. Birmingham Southern took a 2-1 lead that held in the seventh off an RBI single from Kayla Backlund who finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
Ashley and
Danyelle Gerdts both went 2-for-3 in the game. Freshman
Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) threw in all seven innings struck out four. Both team will be back in action on Sunday, April 22 for game three in the series starting at 1 p.m.
