Box Score 2 Softball Takes Two From the College of Charleston More Information:
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team picked up two wins against the College of Charleston on Wednesday, April 25 extending their win streak to four. The Chanticleers scored five runs in the second inning of game one, winning 9-5. CCU won the second with a score of 5-2 and improved to 19-30 overall. The Cougars fell to 29-19 on the season. Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) that scored
Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle’s Landing) who reached on a double to center. The Chants expanded their lead to 6-0 in the top of the second inning. Coastal scored off an RBI walk from
Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball (Radford)), a two-RBI single from Cantrell, and a two-RBI double from
Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball). CCU added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. The first run came from
Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South) who hit a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Cantrell.
Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) added the next two runs with a double to center that scored
Ashley Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) and Sheppard. The Cougars cut the Coastal lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the fourth. CofC scored two when Jennifer Golden hit a home run to left center, her 13
th homer this season. Izmena Cabrera then singled up the middle to scored two more. The Cougars added one more in the fifth on an RBI single from Katie Pesature to cut the lead to four. Neither team would score again and the game ended at 9-5. Cantrell finished the game going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two walks. Hood was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) picked up the win, threw in 4.1 innings and struck out six batters, she is now 6-9 on the season. Gerdts was 2-for-5 at the plate and had one stolen base.
Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) finished the final 2.2 innings and recorded two strikeouts. Coastal kept the bats going in the second game of the doubleheader scoring runs in the first four innings and held the Cougars scoreless for five innings taking a 5-0 lead.
Danyelle Gerdts opened the game with a single. Sheppard then scored Gerdts with a single through the left side for her third RBI of the day. Danyelle was 2-for-3 in game two with an RBI and a stolen base. The Chants went up 2-0 in the second inning when Irwin reached on a walk and scored on a
Danyelle Gerdts sacrifice fly. They added two in the third and brought the score to 4-0. Cillis hit a double to left center and advanced to third on a single from
Ashley Gerdts. Hood then scored them both with a double down the left line. Hood finished the second game going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Allison Cantrell put the final Coastal run on the board in the fourth inning with her 10
th home run of the season. The Panthers scored two runs in the sixth inning off two hits, but couldn’t make up the difference in the final inning giving Coastal the 5-2 victory.
Alicia Irwin went 2-for-2 and picked up her third double of the season. Frederick got the start in the circle and pitched in all seven innings. She struck out four and did not give up an earned run. She is now 9-14 this season. The Chants are back in action this weekend in Lynchburg, Va. for their final regular season series. They take on the Liberty Flames on Friday, Apr. 27 for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. and again on Saturday, Apr. 28 starting at 6 p.m.
