CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (11-5, 0-2 Big South) shot just 30.8 percent from the field, while Liberty (16-2, 2-0 Big South) raced out to a 34-14 halftime lead in a 71-44 win over the Lady Chanticleers Jan. 21 in Conway, S.C.
Sophomore
Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) hit a jumper at 19:03 of the first half to give Coastal a 2-0 lead, but Liberty would answer with four straight points from Moriah Frazee and establish a lead it would never relinquish. A three from sophomore
Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) cut the Flames lead to 10-8, but Liberty would go on a 20-2 run, capped by a Moriah Frazee layup at 3:18. Senior
Vicky Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Walters State C.C.) and freshman
Sydnei Moss (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) hit back-to-back jumpers at the two-minute mark, but Liberty went into the lockerroom wtih a 20-point halftime lead on free throws from Megan Frazee and a Moriah Frazee jumper. Blanchard led Coastal with five points, while Moss had three rebounds in the first half. Megan Frazee had 11 points and nine rebounds in the first 20 minutes, while Moriah Frazee added 10 points and four rebounds. Liberty shot 46.7 percent from the field, while Coastal was at 28.6 percent. A 12-2 run to start the second half by the Lady Flames was capped by a Rebecca Lightfoot layup at 15:23. Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) in the final minute of action cutting the final margin to 27. Blanchard had seven points to lead CCU, while Moss had six rebounds. Rivers blocked three shots in a minute in the first half. For Liberty, Megan Frazee had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Moriah Frazee added 15 points and Courtney Watkins had 11. Allyson Fasnacht led all players with five steals. Liberty went 17-of-22 from the free-throw line and outrebounded Coastal 47-25. The Flames also were 48.1 percent from the field and 77.3 percent from the foul line. Coastal did hit seven three-pointers on the night and forced the Flames into 21 turnovers. Coastal is at UNC Asheville Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on SportSouth. Liberty hosts Presbyterian the same day at 2 p.m.
