Men's Soccer Defeats Liberty 2-1 in Overtime
More Information:
LYNCHBURG, VA.-- The Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team won a hard fought overtime thriller against the Liberty Flames, 2-1 Saturday, Oct. 4 at Liberty Soccer Field.
Ross Kelly (Sugarland, Texas/Clements) scored the first tally of the contest in 36th minute, picking a ball cleanly off the foot of a Liberty defender right outside the 18-yard box, and beat Liberty goalkeeper Paul Gilbert to give the Chants the first goal of the contest.
Coastal Carolina nearly found its second tally of the contest in the 59th minute off an Oron Levy (Yessod-Hamala, Israel/Hamak-Hamala) corner kick that freshman Hunter Thames (Frederick, Md./Urbana) fired on net, but a pair of Liberty defenders were right on the goal line to register the team save for the Flames.
Liberty would control the majority of the quality chances in the final 30 minutes, most notably a Joshua Boateng free-kick from 25 yards out that that was drilled in the Chanticleer wall. The Chants outlasted the Liberty offensive attack until the 90th minute, as Liberty midfielder Chris Mandell fired a shot that went wide, but the rebound was scooped up by Boateng, who found the back of the net and evened things up at 1-1 with less than a minute remaining in regulation.
With just under three minutes to go in the first overtime, Coastal Carolina found gold. Kelly struck again, this time picking up a loose ball in the midfield, and beat his defender from 20 yards out for the "Golden Goal" and the Chanticleers' their 12th consecutive regular season Big South win, dating back to a 5-2 loss at Radford, Oct. 7, 2006.
The win gives Coastal Carolina its first winning streak of the season, after defeating VMI on Sept. 28. The victory also moves the Chants to 2-0 in conference play. Docking’s squad will next be in action at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
