Men's Tennis Loses at Wofford, 4-3 More Information:
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team won the doubles point, but could only pick up two singles victories as the Chanticleers fell to Wofford 4-3 at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, S.C., Tuesday, Feb. 12.
CCU (4-2) posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles in order to get the doubles point. Senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas)) defeated Scott Collins and Christopher Williams 9-7 at No. 2 doubles. Meanwhile, junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) beat Richard Cahi and Alan Donald 8-6 at the No. 3 slot. Wofford (3-2) won at No. 1 doubles as Andrew Stubbs and George Kernodle defeated sophomores Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) 8-6.
Vlaskin and Mellis also won their singles matches on Tuesday. Vlaskin defeated Kernodle 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 slot and now has a 6-0 record at No. 2 singles. Meanwhile, Mellis beat Donald 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 in the No. 4 slot.
Wofford won the other four singles matches. Stubbs defeated Ramos 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, while Collins topped Tzvetkov 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot. Williams defeated freshman Carlo Checchia (Brasilia, Brazil/Galois) 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Withers took Paul Barthomoly to three sets after winning the second set, but was unable to win the third set as Barthomoly won 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
Coastal Carolina returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 14 when it travels to UNC Wilmington. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the UNCW Tennis Complex.
