Men's Tennis Falls at UNC Wilmington, 4-3 More Information:
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team lost to UNC Wilmington 4-3 Thursday, Feb. 14 at UNCW Tennis Complex.
CCU (4-3) swept the doubles competition from UNC Wilmington (3-3) in order to win the doubles point. Sophomores Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) defeated Michael Pereira and Kinshuk Sharma 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas)) posted an 8-6 win over Gustavo Bertei and Brian Ford at No. 2 doubles, while junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) beat Illia Ziamtsou and Alex Antunes 9-7 in the No. 3 slot.
Meanwhile, CCU was only able to pull away with two wins in singles competition. Withers topped Alex Wetherell 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, while freshman Carlo Checchia (Brasilia, Brazil/Galois) defeated Ford 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 6 slot. The Seahawks had wins in the first four slots. Bertei handed Vlaskin his first singles loss of the season as Bertei won 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Pereira came away with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Ramos at the No. 2 slot. Sharma defeated Mellis 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Ziamtsou had a 6-3, 6-4 win over Tzvetkov.
Coastal Carolina returns to action tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 15 when the Chanticleers host No. 71 Tennessee Tech at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. Match time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
