LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (15-8, 3-5 Big South) fell to Liberty (22-2, 7-0 Big South) 76-39 Feb. 16 in the Vines Center. Liberty outscored Coastal 47-20 in the second half to turn a close game at the half into a rout. Coastal got off to a slow start, as the Lady Chanticleers did not score for the first 3:58. The Frazee triplets had Liberty’s first 13 points as Moriah’s two free throws gave the Lady Flames a 13-7 lead. Sophomore
Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) had the hot hand for CCU in the first half, as she cut the Liberty lead to 14-11 with 9:03 left in the half. Liberty would get the advantage back to six on a Courtney Watkins three, then LU ended the half on a 13-6 run as Megan Frazee’s jumper at 1:30 gave Liberty a 29-17 lead. Freshman
Jessica Noll (Myrtle Beach, S.C./St. James) hit a jumper in the corner with 58 seconds left as the two teams went into the locker room with Liberty holding the 29-19 advantage. Stull was 4-of-5 from the field in the first half for eight points. Sophomore
Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) added three points. For Liberty, Moriah Frazee had 10 points and five rebounds. Coastal shot 37.5 percent from the field in the first half, but were 0-of-9 from three-point range. Liberty would score the first five points of the second half and never look back. Liberty would outscore Coastal 31-3 in the first 14:44 as Alexandria Bream’s layup at 5:30 gave Liberty a 62-24 lead. Liberty led 73-33 at 1:53 left on a Heather Smith jumper. Sophomore
Lori Whitaker (Bloomington, Ind./North) and Lyons hit three’s in the last 1:28 for the final 76-39 score. Stull led Coastal with 10 points, while Lyons added seven. Noll and Whitaker had six points apiece. For Liberty, Rebecca Lightfoot had 13 points while Megan and Moriah Frazee added 12. Coastal shot 26.5 percent from the field and were just 3-of-21 from three-point range. The Lady Chants also went 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Liberty was a blistering 65.5 percent in the second half and was 48.3 percent from the floor. The Lady Flames also had 34 points in the paint and 26 points off of turnovers.
