Softball Falls to Winthrop in Saturday Doubleheader More Information:
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's softball team dropped both of its games to Winthrop Saturday, April 19, falling 8-0 in five innings in both games at Terry Field.
During Game One, Winthrop held a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Lisa Kingsmore hit a two-run home run, while later in the inning, Jo-Lynn Smith hit an RBI single through the left side that scored Stephanie Reid from third.
The Eagles scored three more runs during the fourth inning. Sarah Magee singled and then advanced to third when Pearl Coleshill reached on an error. Tessa Thomas loaded up the bases on a fielder's choice, which allowed Lisa Kingsmore's double down the left field line drove in both Magee and Coleshill. Meanwhile, Thomas scored off a Reid single up the middle.
Winthrop scored its final two runs of the game during the bottom of the fifth with Magee scoring off a Thomas single and Coleshill scoring the final run off a Kingsmore sacrifice fly.
Megan Evans had the win after throwing five innings and allowing just one hit. Freshman Ashley Pedersen (Fayetteville, Ga./Whitewater) had the loss after pitching 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs - four earned - off 10 hits.
Sophomore Laicole Walker (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate School) had Coastal's only hit during the first game as she had a lead-off single in the fourth inning.
In Game Two, a Mallory Hogan three-run home run and a Carole Reda double to left center that scored Lenny Stoddart allowed Winthrop to take a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Winthrop added three more runs in the fourth inning as Coleshill hit a one-out, two-run double that drove in Reda and Stoddart, while scoring on a Kingsmore RBI single. The Eagles final run came in the bottom of the fifth as Magee hit a two-out RBI single up the middle that scored Veronica Berry.
Cari Wooldridge received the win after throwing five innings and allowing four hits. Freshman Michelle Evans (Upland, Calif./Upland) picked up the loss after allowing eight runs, six of them earned, off eight hits in 4.2 innings.
Four Lady Chants recorded a hit in the second game, including Walker, whose second hit of the day came as she singled up the middle in the fifth.
Coastal closes out the three-game series with Winthrop Sunday, April 20. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., from Terry Field.
