ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team stepped out of Big South Conference play for a final time this season and defeated South Carolina State 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-15) on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. The Chanticleers improve to 13-9 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 9-15 on the season.
Junior Megan Bickford led the Chants offense with 13 kills on 18 attempts to finish with a .611 attack percentage. Junior Chelsy Kimes recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 14 digs while adding two blocks. Senior Jill Nyhof guided the defense with four blocks and junior Becky Stowers added 12 digs to tie her career high.
Coastal Carolina never allowed the Bulldogs to hit over a .090 in any set and finished with a .064 team attack percentage compared to the Chanticleers' team attack percentage of .357.
In the first set, Coastal Carolina went out to an early 9-1 lead with senior Megan Pollard serving the Chants to five straight points. With S.C. State only down by five at 16-11, the Chants went on a 5-0 run to put them up 20-11. Coastal's offense seemed too strong, allowing the Bulldogs to score only three points before the Chants took the first set. Coastal Carolina dominated most of set holding Bulldogs to only eight kills compared to its 21. Kimes and Sierra Livesay each finished the set with five kills and Meagan Tracey added nine assists.
The second set was more of a fight for Coastal Carolina as both teams stayed close forcing 11 ties with the final at 17-all. After the final tie, the Chanticleers went on an 8-0 run to put the set at a 23-18 Coastal advantage. S.C. State's Bria Brimmer would score one final point for the Bulldogs before two straight errors to finish the set. Nyhof finished the set with five kills and Kimes added another five to give Coastal a 2-0 match advantage.
The third set started similar to the second but at the 4-all tie, Coastal found its hitting to go on a 3-0 run and put them ahead 7-4. The Bulldogs would not go away coming to within one at 9-8. With the Bulldogs lurking, the Chants pulled together a 6-0 run behind Kimes' serving. S.C. State would try to build a comeback, but the Coastal offense could not be stopped and the Chanticleers won the match in three sets.
Coastal Carolina returns home to host its DIG Pink match and take on the Liberty Flames on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
