Women's Basketball Tops Savannah State 57-41

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team defeated Savannah State 57-41 on Sunday, December 20 in the Crescent Bank Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The Chanticleers improved to 8-3 on the season, while the Tigers lost their second straight and fell to 8-5 overall.

Played without starters junior Sydnei Moss (family illness) and senior Devin Rivers (injury), Coastal started the game with a 10-2 run over Savannah State. The Tigers closed the gap to 10-7 with a Kimberly Stamps trey and an Ashlee Barlee lay-in with 11:44 left in the first stanza. The Chanticleers pulled away from the Tigers with a 9-2 run to end the half and take a 27-16 advantage into the halftime locker room. Coastal scored 17 points off of 15 Savannah State turnovers in the first stanza.

Katie White scored eight of Coastal's first 10 points coming out of the locker room, giving the Chants their biggest lead of the game at 37-18. The Tigers responded with a 9-2 run, topped off with a jumper from Stamps that put the game within 10, 39-29, with 7:20 left in the game. SSU got within 10 points three more times, including at 3:27 from Stamps' shot beyond the arc. The Chants put the game out of reach away with two Kendra Reynolds successful free-throws and an Olivia Irick trey.

White tied a career-high with 13 points, while blocking three shots and grabbing four rebounds. Reynolds had a season-high 11 points and nine rebounds, while Irick scored 10 points and corraled four rebounds. The Chants finished the game shooting 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (20-28).

Mattisha Mangum scored a team-high nine points for the Tigers, with seven coming in the second half, and Courtney Long grabbed six boards. Savannah State out rebounded Coastal Carolina 35-33.

The Chanticleers will have a break for the holidays before taking on Elon at home as part of a doubleheader on Dec. 29 at 5 p.m. in Kimbel Arena. The men will follow against Georgia Southern at 7:30 p.m.
