CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team were edged out 76-68 by Winthrop in its final home contest of the season Monday, March 2 at Kimbel Arena. With the loss, Coastal Carolina falls to 14-13 overall and 6-8 in the Big South, while the Lady Eagles improve to 13-14 on the year and 7-7 in the league.
Both squads had three players hit double figures as the Chanticleers were led by sophomore Sydnei Moss, who tied a career high with 22 points and Ashley Fann paced the Lady Eagles with 22 of her own. Junior Amanda Stull and sophomore Kate Jasinski added 17 and 12 points, respectively. Winthrop’s Tiffany Rodd had 18, while teammate Yvonne Van Daalen had 12 points in the contest.
The Chanticleers grabbed a 15-11 lead early, but Winthrop rallied to score eight quick points to take a 19-15 lead with 9:52 remaining in the half. Coastal Carolina strung together its own 10-2 run capped by a three-pointer by Stull to go ahead 25-21 with just under six minutes to play in the frame. Coastal Carolina pushed the lead to six points with two free throws by Jasinski, but Winthrop trimmed it back to two at the foul line at 31-29 with 10 seconds remaining in the half. Moss stepped behind the arc and launched a three-pointer that beat the buzzer to send the Chants in to the half with a 34-29 advantage.
Coastal Carolina’s lead hovered around four points for the first five minutes of the second half, before the Lady Eagles erased the slim advantage and took a two-point lead at 46-44 on a layup from van Daalen at the 12-minute mark. A jumper by Moss tied the game at 48-48 with 10 minutes remaining in the game, but Winthrop hit three consecutive triples to build a seven-point lead at 57-50, with 5:06 left in the game. The Lady Eagles continued to attack the Chanticleer defense and stretched their lead to 11 at 63-52 on a three-pointer by Rodd. The Chants were down by 10 points with as the clock slipped under the minute-mark, but rallied behind two triples from Jasinski and Stull to cut the deficit to five points. Moss drove to the basket and hit a layup and converted the three-point play to as the Chants were within a basket of the Lady Eagles with 20 seconds remaining in the game. Coastal Carolina fouled Winthrop down the stretch, but the Lady Eagles went 6-for-6 in the final seconds and the Chanticleers failed to connect on their field goal attempts as Winthrop held on for the win.
The Chanticleers shot 85.0 percent from the free throw line, but the Lady Eagles' 88.9 percent from the line carried them down the stretch. The Lady Eagles held a 34-31 advantage on the glass and scored 28 points in the point compared to Coastal Carolina’s 10. Winthrop also outshot the Chanticleers 48.1 percent to 39.6 percent.
Coastal Carolina heads out on the road for its final two contests of the season starting in Boiling Springs with Gardner-Webb Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m.
