Men's Tennis Defeats Presbyterian 6-1 Sunday Afternoon

More Information:

CLINTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s tennis team battled through up to 30 miles per hour winds to defeat Presbyterian 6-1 Sunday, March 29 at the Templeton Tennis Center. With the win, the Chanticleers improve to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big South.   Coastal Carolina won all three doubles matches starting on court one, where senior German Perez and junior Ernesto Ramos topped Presbyterian’s Matthew Martin and Zachary Sprouse 8-3. Senior Joseph Withers and sophomore John Hairston got an 8-4 victory over Andrew Lee and Brad Luciuk on court three. Playing at the No. 2 spot, juniors Plamen Tzvetkov and Dmitry Vlaskin edged out Michael Nicol and Patrick Fediuk 9-8 for the doubles sweep.   In singles, the Chanticleers tweaked the top of the order slightly as Ramos played at No. 1 for the second time this season and Perez was slotted into the No. 2 position for the first time this year. Both players were successful as Ramos improved his singles record to 13-3 with a 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 victory over Martin on court one, while Perez cruised past Nicol 6-1, 6-3. The Blue Hose scored their only point of the day at the No. 3 slot as Presbyterian’s Fediuk slipped past Vlaskin 6-1, 6-3. On the final three courts, Coastal Carolina took straight set victories over the Blue Hose as Tzvetkov defeated Sprouse 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 and Withers earned the 6-1, 7-1 triumph over Mark Cannatelli at No. 6. Sophomore Dorian Sovic got his 11th singles victory of the season with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Lee at the No. 5 spot.   “I think this match was more about mental toughness than anything else today with the winds,” Head Coach Chris Powers continued. “I’m proud of the way the guys fought through the elements to get the win and now we are looking forward to getting up to Asheville and playing a solid match tomorrow.”   Coastal Carolina will make a quick turnaround and head up to UNC Asheville Monday, March 30 for a meeting with the Bulldogs. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
