Men's Soccer Ties Furman in Hard Fought Battle

Sept. 17, 2009

Final Stats

The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team earned a 3-3 tie against Furman (2-2-2) today (Sept. 17) in Conway, S.C.

The first 30 minutes of the game saw Furman on the attack as the Paladins registered four shots and one on goal. Debola Ogunseye opened the scoring 26:01 into the game after dribbling around a Coastal defender to beat goalkeeper Taylor Kelliher.

Nearly six minutes later, the Chanticleers would tie the match when Alex Russell's blocked shot came to senior James Stapleton, who put the ball past Furman goalkeeper Alex Kann. The goal is Stapleton's fifth of the season and he has now scored in four consecutive games.

The first period would end in a 1-1 tie with the Chanticleers leading in shots 6-5. The Paladin's would apply pressure on Kelliher in the beginning of the second half, who would make two consecutive saves at the 52-minute mark of the game. Kelliher finished the game with eight saves.

Coastal Carolina was the first to strike in the second half as Joe Anderson would be set up in a play from Stapleton and Ross Kelly to earn his first goal as a Chanticleer, putting Coastal Carolina up 2-1.

The lead for Coastal lasted just a minute as Ogunseye would head the ball after a set-up play from Jordan Howard to tie the game once again.

Anderson tallied his second goal of the night soon after, which was assisted by Djamel Bekka at 71:34 and put the Chants up on the scoreboard 3-2.

Trying to hold the Paladins from scoring, Kelliher made two more saves to keep the lead, but the Paladins tied the game at three after Ogunseye received a cross pass from Fabian Vorbe and finished his hat trick with two minutes left in the game to force overtime.

Both teams fought hard in the midfield as the Chants only registered one shot in first overtime and one on goal in the second. The Paladins registered no shots in the first overtime and just two shot in the second to leave the game at a three-all tie.

The Chanticleers are now 2-2-2 on the season and will have a week break before traveling to the West Coast to play in the Cal State Fullerton Tournament Friday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 p.m. (PST.) and Sunday, Sept. 27 at 3:00 p.m. (PST). Coastal Carolina faces host Cal State Fullerton Friday and Cal State Northridge Sunday.
