FULLERTON, Calif. - The Coastal Carolina University men's soccer team (2-2-3) tied Cal State Fullerton (4-2-1) 1-1 in game two of the Big West Challenge at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif.
The Chanticleers took a 1-0 halftime lead as Ross Kelly headed in a free kick from Robert Hunter at 27:59. It was Kelly's first goal of the season as well as Hunter's first assist, as he played his first game of the season in a Chant uniform.
Scott Angevine had two saves in the first half for the Chants. The Titans outshot the Chants 5-2 in the first half and had a 5-1 corner-kick advantage.
Cal State Fullerton tied the game at one at 61:27 as Michael Denny converted on a penalty kick after a foul in the penalty box by the Chants. It was Denny's second goal of the year. Coastal Carolina had a chance to score in overtime, but a Titan defender blocked Joe Anderson's blast off a corner kick.
Angevine had four saves for the Chants in the tie. James Stapelton led the team with two shots. For Cal State Fullerton, Kevin Venegas had four shots, while Trevor Whidden stopped three shots.
Coastal Carolina wraps up the Big West Challenge Sunday, Sept. 27 against Cal State Northridge. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. PDT.
