Conway, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team topped Francis Marion with a 5-2 win followed by a convincing 7-0 win at the Coastal Carolina Doubleheader Day. The matches were the first action for both teams in the fall season.
To begin the day, the Chanticleers secured the doubles point by sweeping the Patriots in all three slots. In singles, Chants Matt Gordon, Alex Funkhauser, Dmitry Vlaskin, and Dorian Sovic all picked up wins.
In the second match of the day, the Chanticleers started the match strong claiming the first slot, as Ernesto Ramos and Gordon defeated Mickey Poirier and Jack Bishop, 8-1. The Patriots would take No. 2 doubles 8-4, but Coastal Carolina's No. 3 team of Funkhauser and Sovic sealed up the doubles point winning 8-2. In singles, the Chanticleers didn't look back as Gordon, Ramos. Funkhauser, and Vlaskin would convincingly win their matches, as only four singles matches were played.
"Today's performance was a good start to the fall season," Head Coach Chris Powers said. "Francis Marion is well coached, and I thought we played with good focus and intensity. I'm excited to see how we fare up at the Landfall Tournament next week."
The Chanticleers will return to fall season action next weekend, Sept. 11-13 for the Landfall Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington.
