BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team couldn't keep up after hot shooting spurred a 19-0 Gardner-Webb run in the second half, dropping a 78-33 decision on Saturday, January 30 in Paul Porter Arena. The Chanticleers fell to 12-7 overall and 3-4 in the Big South, while the Bulldogs continue to maintain the number one spot in the Big South Conference with a 7-1 league record and an 18-3 overall mark.
The Chanticleers started the game off hot from beyond the arc, where they hit their first six points to take an early 6-2 lead in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the game. Gardner-Webb tied the game up twice, and took its first lead at the 12:44 mark, going up 10-8 on a pair of Monique Hudson free-throws. The two teams battled back and forth, with three ties in the closing minutes including at 18-18 before the Bulldogs closed the half on a 7-2 run to lead at the break 25-20.
The second half was a different story as the Bulldogs found their rhythm on both ends of the floor, filling up the basket while not allowing the Chants to get their offense going. The Bulldogs opened the half on a 19-0 run over the first six minutes to take control of the game 44-20 and never look back. GWU outscored Coastal 53-13 in the second half, as the Chants were handcuffed to just 15.6 percent from the field (5-for-32), while the Bulldogs were an impressive 50.6 percent (20-for-34) from the field in the final stanza.
Gardner-Webb finished the game shooting 53.6 percent (30-for-56) from the field, posting 38 points in the paint and tallying 27 points off turnovers. Monique Hudson had a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds, while Letroya Pope followed with 14 points. Margaret Roundtree gathered a game-high 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs out rebounded the Chants 49-24.
Leading Coastal was junior Sydnei Moss with 11 points and four rebounds, while junior Katie Ahaus followed with seven points, all coming in the first half.
Coastal continues the road trip, heading to Clinton, S.C. to take on Presbyterian on Monday, February 1 at 7 p.m.
