BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team ran its win streak to four games with a 2-1 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday evening from Greene-Harbison Field.
The Chanticleers have not lost since Oct. 2 and have only allowed two goals during the win streak.
Coastal Carolina (8-4-1, 4-1-0) got on the scoreboard first in the 39th minute when sophomore midfielder Luis Faz picked up his third goal of the season. Faz hit a strike from approximately 25 yards out and beat Gardner-Webb keeper Adam Garcia to the far post.
The Chanticleers upped their lead to 2-0 with a goal early in the second half by Pedro Ribeiro. Ribeiro notched his team-leading fifth goal of the year off an assist from freshman Kristoffer Sandtroen.
Gardner-Webb (4-8-0, 2-2-0) cut the Coastal lead in half in the 71st minute on a goal from Nicolas Wrobel. Wrobel tallied his sixth goal of the season after controlling the ball following a blocked shot from one of his teammates. Wrobel then sent a shot into the back right corner past a diving Scott Angevine.
"I think Gardner-Webb has a very good team despite what the record might say," Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking said. "This is always a tough place to play, but I am very pleased with the way we were able to compete and come together at the end and hold on for the win. This was a very big win for us."
The Coastal defense held the Bulldogs scoreless over the final 19:49 to claim its second straight win over Gardner-Webb.
Angevine finished with two saves and has not allowed more than one goal in a single game since Sept. 25 against the College of Charleston.
Gardner-Webb held a 14-13 edge and shot and a 13-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Coastal Carolina returns to action Wednesday night when the Chanticleers step out of conference and travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on NC State at 7 p.m.
