CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team looks for its fifth straight win against a conference opponent when the Chanticleers welcome Winthrop to the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
The first 50 fans in attendance will receive a free chicken sandwich courtesy of Chick-fil-A and Coastal Sports Properties. In addition, free tee shirts will be thrown into the stands at different points throughout the course of the game.
Coastal Carolina (8-5-1, 4-1-0) enters the weekend following a 3-1 setback at ACC foe NC State Wednesday night. Chanticleer sophomore forward Sean McCormick scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Luis Faz to account for the Coastal goal.
Despite the loss to the Wolfpack, the Chanticleers have won four straight conference games and sit in second place in the league standings. Coastal has not lost to a Big South opponent since falling to Liberty 1-0 on Oct. 1 and is a perfect 2-0 at home in league games this season.
Coastal freshman midfielder Pedro Ribeiro has scored a goal in two of the last three games and enters Saturday first on the team with a total of five goals. Ribeiro ranks seventh in the Big South in goals scored and stands in first place in the conference rankings with four game-winning goals.
Ribeiro netted the game-winning goal in each of the Chants' two most recent conference victories. The Belo Horizonte, Brazil, native gave Coastal a 1-0 win over UNC Asheville Oct. 13 with a goal in double overtime before claiming the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win at Gardner-Webb on Oct. 16.
Chanticleer newcomers Kristoffer Sandtroen and Justin Portillo have both recorded five assists thus far this season and lead the team and are tied for second in the Big South in that category. Junior keeper Scott Angevine has turned in five shutouts this season and leads the Big South with an 0.90 goals against average.
Winthrop (4-8-1, 2-3-0) has lost its last two games and is coming off a 3-1 home loss to the College of Charleston Tuesday night. It was the fourth straight game that the Eagles have allowed at least three goals. In fact, Winthrop is ranked eighth in the Big South in goals allowed with 28.
Midfielder Miquel Casajuana leads the Eagles with nine points on three goals and three assists, while freshman midfielder Matt Stinson is second on the team with six points on three goals.
Coastal owns a 22-16-2 record against Winthrop in the all-time series that dates back to the 1978 season and have won eight of the last 11 meetings between the two schools. The Chanticleers beat the Eagles 3-1 last year during the regular season before earning a 1-1 draw in the Big South Conference Tournament finals. Winthrop, however, won 4-2 in penalty kicks and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
