CONWAY, S.C. - Joe Anderson netted the golden goal and Coastal Carolina picked up its fifth straight conference win with a 2-1 double overtime victory over Winthrop Saturday afternoon from the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
Anderson put the game-winner away with 1:43 left to play en route to his second goal of the season. The Chanticleers started the scoring opportunity on the right side of the field on a cross from sophomore forward Sebastian Bahos. Anderson used a chest trap to settle the ball at his feet before turning towards the goal and blasting a shot to the far post past Winthrop keeper Michael Flato.
"We're not scoring on chances that we're getting, but we're finding a way to win and that's a tremendous credit to the senior in this group," Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking said. "They are doing a great job with leadership and they are really rallying the guys at critical moments in the game. It goes to show you how committed they are to each other, to winning and to achieving the goals they set forth at the beginning of the year. I am very proud of the way we grinded out a win today against a very good Winthrop team."
Coastal Carolina (9-5-1, 5-1-0) started the scoring in the first half when sophomore Leo Mukofsky recorded his first goal of the season. Mukofsky gained possession of the ball near midfield and dribbled towards the goal knifing his way through the Eagle defense. Mukofsky weaved his way past the back line of defense and hit a chip shot of the finger tips of a charging Flato.
Winthrop (4-9-1, 2-4-0) evened the score at 1-1 minutes before halftime when Miquel Casajuana scored his fourth goal of the season. Tomas Brennan started the scoring chance with a cross into the Coastal box that was slapped away by Chanticleer keeper Scott Angevine. Casajuana gained possession of the loose ball and followed with a strike to the far post past a diving Angevine.
Angevine picked up the win after finishing with eight saves and holding the Eagles scoreless for the final 68:40. The Kansas City, Kan., native hasn't allowed more than one goal to any Big South opponent thus far this season.
The Chanticleers held a 23-13 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Coastal Carolina returns to action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when the Chanticleers host High Point from the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field in a battle for first place.
