CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team saw its five-game conference winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 double overtime loss to High Point Wednesday night from the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
High Point sophomore forward Shane Malcolm netted the golden goal in the 106th minute for his sixth goal of the season. Shawn Sloan played a through ball past the Coastal Carolina defense that found its way to the feet of Malcolm. Chanticleer keeper Scott Angevine left his post and charged toward Malcolm in an effort to cut his angle, but Malcolm managed to put a shot on goal that beat Angevine near post.
The victory assured the Panthers the Big South regular season championship, while the Chanticleers can finish in second place in the league standings with a victory Saturday at Radford.
High Point (12-3-1, 7-0-0) scored the first goal of the game and took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore midfielder Fejiro Okiomah struck in the second minute. Panther forward Scott Rojo sent a shot on goal from the left side of the field that was initially blocked by a Chanticleer defender. Okiomah secured the loose ball and sent a strike past Angevine for his ninth goal of the season.
The Chanticleers answered just under five minutes later when freshman Robby Joe Daniels recorded the first goal of his career. Kristoffer Sandtroen created the scoring chance with a cross from the right side of the field that found the feet of Luis Faz inside the Panther box. Faz trapped the ball with his foot and sent a quick pass to his left to Daniels for a strike past High Point keeper Michael Chesler. Sandtroen picked up his team-leading sixth assist on the play.
"It was a disappointing loss because I think we had some good chances," Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking said. "It could have gone either way, but in the end it kind of tipped in their favor. We're still trying to find ourselves up front and find that guy that can put it in the back of the net for us."
The two teams played an extremely physical contest after the first two goals as each team was issued three yellow cards and a combined 25 fouls were called. Neither team managed much of a scoring threat through regulation as Wednesday's game was a matchup of the top two defenses in the Big South.
Coastal Carolina (9-6-1, 5-2-0) came inches from scoring the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in the second half. The Chants were awarded a corner kick and freshman Justin Portillo sent a cross into the Panther box that was handled by junior Jacob Downey. Downey played a volley forward and Cyprian Hedrick fired a header that sailed just inches over the crossbar and out of bounds.
High Point put itself in position to win the goal on a goal by Malcolm, but an outstanding defensive play from Sandtroen kept the game tied and helped extend the contest into a second overtime. Chesler made a save on a Chanticleer shot and cleared the ball past midfield where Malcolm had snuck behind the Coastal backline. Malcolm had only Angevine to beat, but Sandtroen swooped in at the last second and blocked the shot attempt to leave the score tied at 1-1.
Coastal returns to action Saturday at noon when the Chanticleers travel to Radford, Va., to take on Radford in the final conference game of the season.
