Coastal And Radford Play To 1-1 Draw

Oct. 30, 2010

Box Score

RADFORD, Va. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Radford in the final conference game of the season Saturday afternoon from Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

Coastal Carolina (9-6-2, 5-2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first half when sophomore Leo Mukofsky scored his second goal of the season. Mukofsky beat Radford keeper Joey Dennis with a header in the Highlander box following a long throw in from freshman Robby Joe Daniels.

Radford held a 5-4 edge in shots in the first half and had its best scoring opportunity with just under eight minutes to go when Mike Handlin got free in the box and just missed high with a right-footed strike.

Chanticleer keeper Scott Angevine made an outstanding save in the 56th minute to keep the Highlanders scoreless. Bernardo Ulmo tried to bend a free kick around the Coastal wall from just outside the 18-yard box, but Angevine made a diving save to his left.

The Highlanders tied the game in the 60th minute on an own goal. The equalizer came when Iyiola Awosika's cross from the far side to the cutting Ulmo was cleared into the net by a sliding Coastal defender.

Ulmo nearly netted the golden goal with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation, but his shot off an Awosika feed hit off the left post.

Radford had two shots hit the post in the second overtime, and Angevine made a fantastic kick save from his backside off a shot from Brendan Shaffer.

"I was very pleased with the way our guys were able to battle and fight against Radford in a very tough place to play," Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking said. "I like how committed we are to being able to fight through difficult times and find ways to be successful in close games. I think that has been a signature of our team all year, and I believe that is a good thing as we head into the Big South Tournament."

Coastal Carolina returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. when the Chanticleers travel to College Park, Md., to take on ACC foe and third-ranked Maryland from Ludwig Field.
