BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team swept Gardner-Webb 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-13) for the second time this season on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Paul Porter Arena. The Chanticleers improve to 14-13 overall and 7-5 in the Big South, while the Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 5-21 and 0-11 in the league.
Senior Chelsy Kimes finished with a match-high 14 kills and added 10 digs to earn her 15th double-double of the season. Freshman Meghan Laffin tallied seven kills for the Chants, while Amanda Russell and Sierra Livesay registered six kills each. Defensively, Lindsay Gill recorded 13 digs, and Megan Bickford posted three blocks. Lauren Alejo dished out a match-high 22 assists.
In the first set, Gardner-Webb went out to a 3-1 lead, but Coastal battled back to tie the set at 4-all. Both teams kept the score close and following a 9-9 tie, the Chants went on a 9-3 run to put them ahead 18-12, forcing the Bulldogs to call a timeout. Gardner-Webb scored five more points before Coastal took the first set 25-17. Kimes had a set-high five kills, and Alejo dished out seven assists.
The Chanticleers went out to an 8-0 lead to start the match and never looked back as it cruised to a 25-13 set win. Coastal finished the set hitting .361 and held Gardner-Webb to a .167 attack percentage. Kimes added another six kills to her total, and Bickford posted two blocks.
The third set started similar to the second with Coastal going out to a 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs came to within one at 8-7, but it was as close as Gardner-Webb would get as the Chants went on a 10-2 run to put the set out of reach. Coastal finished the set on a 7-4 run, winning the third set 25-13. Laffin posted two solo blocks, and Bickford tallied seven digs.
The Chanticleers continue its three-match road swing, traveling to Charleston Southern for a 6 p.m. match on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
